Life

April 22, 2009

Okay, I promise to post a proper review of the Bazan show from last week. I am holding off because I want it to include an mp3, pictures and possibly some video. Needless to say, it was a magical evening full of friends, music and laughter.

What else is new in the world of Josh? I was supposed to go to Montana last weekend to visit my sister, but the roads were closed due to weather. So instead, I celebrated a “staycation” haha. It was boring, but that is ok. Also, it looks like I am going to be forced to go on strike in May, which in essence means I will be without work/pay for about a month. I am not too excited about unions right now. If you know of any temp work that needs to be done after May 9th, I am in!

Bigotry?

April 15, 2009

I read this on a forum I frequent.

“Re: Christianity + homosexuality

The arguments that are used against homosexuality are the same arguments that were used to justify segregation and racism. I think that, with time, people are going to look back at this bigotry the same way we look back on slavery and “white only” water fountains. It’s just another example of otherwise decent people being too caught up in their upbringing and traditions to look at the world rationally.”

Regardless of our thoughts concerning homosexuality and how we, as Christians approach the issue, this is concerning to me. In 50 years, is the church going to be distanced even further from everyday life because of our hard-line stances on these kinds of issues? Are we going to be seen as bigots and un-accepting? How do we overcome this perception?

Crucified by Nails of Silence

April 10, 2009

I was waiting for the elevator at work today, and I over heard a couple guys talking about their Easter plans. One said “Nah, we aren’t doing anything; my kids are grown up now and not into the whole egg hunt thing”.

It was pretty shocking to me. I was speaking with Hoshi last week, and we were discussing how this needs to be the time when the story of Jesus needs to be yelled from a mountain top. Sometimes, I feel like my relationship with God is kind of like anything else. When you spend a certain amount of time with someone or something, it becomes almost stale or second nature. We need to make a conscious effort to remember exactly what Christ did for us and the impact of those actions.

John 12

23Jesus replied, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. 25The man who loves his life will lose it, while the man who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.
27″Now my heart is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. 28Father, glorify your name!”
Then a voice came from heaven, “I have glorified it, and will glorify it again.” 29The crowd that was there and heard it said it had thundered; others said an angel had spoken to him.
30Jesus said, “This voice was for your benefit, not mine. 31Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out. 32But I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to myself.” 33He said this to show the kind of death he was going to die.

Feeling Sound

This is a fascinating video about a deaf percussionist. She talks about how music needs to be felt. It’s a bit long, but really interesting:

Suffering and the Triumph of God

April 3, 2009

My friend Danny Yencich recently gained his undergrad in Biblical Studies. He posted up an mp3 of his final message. I hit play in my mp3 player, not expecting to be as enthralled as I was. I realize that when I post these kinds of things, about 10% of my viewers will listen, but I highly encourage everyone to check this out.
